Ian Coaching at Kerala, India

I believe the most important role in Cricket is the coaching of our children prior to competition.

Young cricketers learn quickly and become familiar with the routine that ultimately determines style and technique.

This is why I find it so frustrating to see a 14 year old struggling to execute batting and bowling techniques. Nine times out of ten it is simply because he/she has never had the proper instruction from the beginning.

Therefore, in my opinion, it is essential that we introduce pre-competition development structures. These should be based on repetitive reinforcement and encouragement. This also gives the young player confidence to continue with cricket.

All clubs rely on volunteer coaches who have varied levels of experience. For an appointed coach, this responsibility can be enormous… even an overwhelming and thankless task at times.

Would your club like to be able to provide support to these coaches?

I am able to provide your club with a program that can be used by all your coaches and parents. This program allows access to training schedules, coaching advice and visual demonstrations on how to set up structures and coach specific skills.

THE   PACE   BOWLING   COACH
by  Ian  Callen

As a cricket coach you want to be the best you can be - for the players and for yourself - but it is impossible to be an expert in all areas of the game. My expertise covers:

  • Pace Bowling education and focus.

  • Analysis of the technical, physical and mental aspects of the Pace Bowling discipline.

  • In-depth understanding of Pace Bowling from fundamental skills to advanced tactics and strategy.

  • Communicating to players in a way that gets results.

For example, when employed as bowling coach of Northcote Cricket Club, I was able to assist David Saker. David was a talented cricketer who needed advanced strategies, confidence and self belief.  (David went on to a wonderful cricket career with Victoria and Tasmania and is now the Bowling Coach of England).

Four the Past 4 years, I have assisted former Victorian Coach and Chairman of Selectors, Michael O’Sullivan and a particular highlight has been the development of his young pace bowling attack and the success of John Hastings (2010 Bradman Medal for Best Young Player).

My involvement with John Hastings was about tactics and what would work best for him. We discussed all aspects of his bowling in general and how best to take advantage of his strengths and most importantly… how to turn things around when under pressure.

John Hastings said to me, “you know Ian… nobody has ever talked to me about THESE THINGS”.

Today, my experience as a coach has been enhanced even further as I am now able to draw from the latest information, technology and equipment.

My Coaching Program includes:

  • Attendance on match days to monitor game performance and professionalism in clutch situations.

  • Video your bowlers from front/back and side.

  • Provide video analysis.

  • Liaise on what things are being done well and what can be worked on instantly.

  • Provide a checklist plan crucial for the long term development and improvement of your players which your club coach can monitor.

  • Fitness and Nutrition.

  • Provide discussion on bowling strategies and focus.

ALL supported by my own line digital TV program..

Players are provided with an online password that will allow them to view themselves on video which includes my commentary and coaching notes.
